Today's recommendation is a book I think many Talossans might appreciate. What if the Greek gods existed for real? What if two of them decided to set up Plato's Republic, just to take the idea out for a ride and see if it works? This month, Tor Books are giving away the e-book version of Jo Walton's The just city for free to all citizens resident in Talossa, in the big neighbour, and in the other big nation north of the big neighbour. Download and read if you are a resident of any of these areas. I liked it very much.

This book sounds very interesting. Do you need to have read Plato's Republic to enjoy it, though? I started reading it but the edition of the ebook was so poor I ended up dropping it.
Too bad I am not a citizen of any of those nations (yet) to take a look at the book.

There's a menu to choose from and you have to tell them you are in the USA or Canada to be allowed to download. No, you don't have to have read Plato's Republic to enjoy it. (I haven't.)

Looks interesting! Unfortunately the download buttons don't seem to do anything for me. Will have to try from another browser later.

Today's recommendation is a graphic novel. Surrealist, science fantasyish. Brilliant. The publisher's description really says it all: I don't know how easy it is to get hold of in the GTA, but it's well worth getting. Publishers web page.

Discussing The Hobbit in the thread about movies, I thought about this list where people vote on their favourite books when they were eleven. This is what it currently looks like: 1 Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery 2 A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle 3 The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien 4 Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome 5 Over Sea, Under Stone by Susan Cooper 6 The Black Cauldron by Lloyd Alexander 7 The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett 8 The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis 9 From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E. L. Konigsburg 10 Harriet the Spy by Louise Fitzhugh www.librarything.com/list/10969/all/ElevensesAlthough I have read them all except for the two last (that I have never heard of, actually), I had read none of them when I was eleven, mostly because I didn't grow up in an English-speaking country I think.

Idem. I remember reading The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe when I was around eleven, but I don't remember my exact age when I did.

That's the one I had in fact read when I was eleven, in translation of course.

The only one of these I have ever read is #9
